Before we dive into the requirements for dogs that have already been declared dangerous or are included in the restricted breed dog list for each state, let’s learn how to avoid a declaration.

The warning sign for Dangerous Dogs in WA – Western Australia is to be placed at each entrance to the property to warn the public that there is a dangerous dog inside. The prescribed design must be a white rectangle measuring 200m by 300mm, must be made of durable material, must contain the words WARNING in white capital letters measuring 30mm high inside a red rectangle measuring 190mm by 45mm near the top of the sign, must include an image of a dog showing a black head and neck wearing the Dangerous Dog Collar measuring 100mm high inside a red circle 160mm in diameter. The Text DANGEROUS DOG must also be included below the red circle measuring 20mm high.
A secured Dog Muzzle for Dangerous Dogs in Western Australia must be worn by the dog at all times whenever it is in a public place to ensure that the dog wouldn’t be able to cause any injury by biting.
Enclosure Requirements for Dangerous Dogs in WA – Western Australia
A Dangerous Dog in WA – Western Australia must be kept in an enclosure that prevents it from escaping, being removed or released without permission, and prevent a child under 7 years of age from entering or inserting part of its body into the enclosure.
In WA – Western Australia, Dangerous Dogs are required to be microchipped within 7 days after declaration while Restricted Breed Dogs are required to do the same within 30 days after they have reached 3 months of age.
The Companion Animals Act 1998 and Companion Animals Regulation 2008 in NSW – New South Wales states that all dog owners with Dangerous Dogs must comply with regulatory requirements.
Dangerous Dogs in NSW – New South Wales are required to wear a Dangerous Dog Collar at all times. There are 3 size options to choose from.

Dangerous Dog Signs in NSW – New South Wales must be placed at every entrance to the property to warn the public of a Dangerous Dog and at every gate of the dangerous dog’s enclosure. The sign must be made of durable material for it to last, it must measure 400mm x 400mm square, it must contain an image of a dangerous dog and the text “Warning Dangerous Dog” on it.
In NSW – New South Wales, whenever the Dangerous Dog or the Menacing Dog is out of its enclosure and in a public place, a Dog Muzzle strong enough to prevent the dog from biting must be worn at all times.
Enclosure for Dangerous Dogs NSW – New South Wales
A Dangerous Dog in NSW – New South Wales must be kept in a prescribed enclosure within 3 months after the dog has been declared. The regulations require the enclosure to meet the following requirements.
The New South Wales government requires that all Dangerous Dogs and Menacing Dogs must be neutered within 28 days after the declaration to ensure that aggressive behavior is reduced.
The Victorian government under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and the Domestic Animals Regulations 2015 demands all dog owners with Dangerous Dogs to comply with regulations or face penalties that could amount to thousands of dollars.
There are 2 recommended sized of Dangerous Dog Collars in VIC – Victoria. This Dangerous Dog Collar is coloured red and yellow diagonal stripes. At least one of the colours is reflective to easily identify a Dangerous Dog in the dark.
According to Dangerous Dog Regulations in VIC – Victoria, a Dangerous Dog Sign must be placed at all entrances to the property where a Dangerous Dog is kept. A specific design is required by the regulation and must only be used for Dangerous Dogs.

Restricted Breed Dogs in VIC – Victoria gets its own special warning sign design. The regulation requires it to be rectangular in shape measuring 10cm x 30cm, made of durable material and contains at least 1 reflective colour.
A strong enough Dog Muzzle for Dangerous Dog in VIC – Victoria must be worn by the dog all the time whenever it is in a public place to prevent it from biting.
Dangerous Dog Enclosure in VIC – Victoria
An enclosure is a regulatory requirement for Dangerous Dogs and Restricted Breed Dogs in VIC – Victoria. They must be kept in a prescribed enclosure at all times whenever the dog is inside the owner’s property where the dog is usually kept. The enclosure must meet the following requirements.
Under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and the Animal Management (Cats and Dog) Regulation 2009, the Queensland government demands these requirements from dog owners with Dangerous, Menacing and Restricted Breed Dogs.
All Dangerous, Menacing and Restricted Breed Dogs are required by regulation to wear a collar at all times with an attached prescribed Identifying Dog Tag. The Dog Tag is must meet the following requirements according to regulation:
A Dog Muzzle that is sufficiently secure and durable for Dangerous, Menacing and Restricted Breed Dogs must always be worn whenever the dog is not at its home or enclosure. A secured Dog Muzzle is required by regulation to ensure that the dog may not cause injury to other humans or animals by biting.
A prescribed enclosure must be installed on the premises where the dog will be kept. The enclosure must meet certain regulations to ensure the safety of the public and any persons on the premises.
The state of Queensland under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Regulation 2009, requires all dog owners with Dangerous, Menacing and Restricted Breed Dogs to install prescribed dog warning signs at each entrance of the premises where the dog is ordinarily kept. The signs must comply with the following requirements:
• Measures 360mm (h) x 260mm (w)
• Made of Firm and Strong Materials.
• Must have a Yellow Background and Black Border
• Must contain the words ‘BEWARE – DANGEROUS DOG’ for Dangerous Dogs measuring 50mm (h)
• Must contain the words ‘BEWARE – MANACING DOG’ for Menacing Dogs measuring 50mm (h)
• Must contain the words ‘declared under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008, chapter 4’ measuring 15mm (h)
• The text must be Indelible, Legible and Black.
With the Dog Control Act 2000 and the Dog Control Regulations 2010, the Tasmanian government requires dog owners with dangerous and restricted breed dogs with the following.
An approved Warning Sign for Dangerous Dogs and Restricted Breed Dog Sign in TAS – Tasmania must be displayed at every entrance to the premises.

• Made of Durable Metal
• Designed Similar to the Signs below
• At least 1 Reflective Colour
Dangerous Dogs and Restricted Breed Dogs in TAS – Tasmania are required to wear at all times, an approved Dangerous Dog Collar that consists of Red and Yellow Stripes 25mm in width, alternating at 45 degrees. At least one of the colours must reflect light in the dark and be made of durable materials. Must be able to allow a leash to be attached and the collar must be able to be securely fastened.

An enclosure for Dangerous Dogs in TAS – Tasmania must be installed in the premises where the dog is kept. The enclosure must comply with the prescribed requirements below.
Dangerous Dogs and Restricted Breed Dogs in TAS – Tasmania is required to wear a durable Dog Muzzle at all times whenever the dog is in a public place. This is to protect other people and animals from biting.
