PetSafe® Stubborn Dog
Receiver Collar
Manual

How does System work?

The system works by producing a radio signal from the Fence Transmitter to the 2800 feet of Boundary Wire. The Boundary Wire may be buried or attached to a fixed object to form an enclosure for the “pet area”.

The Pet Area will temporarily be placed with Boundary Flags to visually define the boundary points. The flags will be removed once the pet has grown accustomed to the boundaries you have set.

The pet wears a Receiver Collar with Contact Points touching his neck. Once trained, the pet is allowed to roam freely in the specified Pet Area. Once the pet comes close to the Warning Zone Area, the Receiver Collar will give a warning beep and will vibrate.

If the pet continues to move closer to the Static Correction Zone, a safe Static Correction will be felt through the Contact Points. The correction will get his attention and the pet will find a way to stop the correction by going back in the “Pet Area” which is “correction-free”.

This PetSafe® In-Ground Fence™ has been proven safe, comfortable, and effective. The products are for pets over 8 pounds.

Preparing the Receiver Collar

Your Receiver Collar comes with pre-installed contact points. You may tighten the Contact Points using the Test Light Tool by moving one-half turn beyond finger tight (1A). Please check that this is tight at least weekly.

Inserting and Removing the Battery

NOTE: NEVER install the battery while the Collar Receiver is on your pet to avoid accidental correction.

  1. Remove the screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Remove the Battery Lid (1B).
  3. Install a 9-volt alkaline battery (1C).
  4. Replace the Battery Lid (1C).
  5. Reinstall the screws.

Do not over-tighten the screws to avoid breaking.

9-volt alkaline batteries for replacement can be found at many retailers.

Setting the Correction Level

Before attempting to set the Correction Level; read carefully the instructions below.

  1. Remove the clear plastic cover with the edge of the Test Light Tool to expose the Correction Level Button (1D).
  2. With the battery installed, press the Correction Level Button and release when the Receiver Indicator lights up (1E).
  3. The Receiver Indicator Light will emit a series of flashes representing the Correction Level.
  4. After setting the Correction Level, replace the cover to protect the Correction Level Button.

The Correction Levels increase in strength starting from level 1 to 5. Pushing the Correction Level Button while the Receiver Collar is on level 5 will cause the Receiver Collar to be back to level 1. Please refer to the Function and Response Table to choose the ideal Correction Level for your pet.

The Receiver Collar will emit a Warning Tone and vibrate each time the pet enters the Warning Zone area, regardless of the correction level. If it set to Level to and above levels and the pet continues going near the Correction Zone, he will receive a Static Correction. The Receiver Collar will also automatically increase the level of Static Correction the longer the pet remains in the Static Correction Zone.

The Receiver Indicator Light also acts as a low battery indicator, it flashes every 5 seconds when battery replacement is needed. Test your Receiver Collar at least once a month to verify that it is functioning properly or that it activates at the Boundary Wire.

Over Correction Protection

In the unlikely event that your pet “stays put” in the Static Correction Zone, this feature limits the static correction to a maximum of 30 seconds. While the system stops any further static correction, the warning tone will continue until the pet leaves the Static Correction Zone.

Fitting the Receiver Collar

Important: The proper fit and placement of your Receiver Collar are essential for successful training. The Contact Points should have direct contact with the pet’s skin.

To ensure a proper fit, please follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that no battery is installed in the Receiver Collar.
  2. Start with your pet standing comfortably (2A).
  3. Place the Receiver Collar on your pet with the “PetSafe®” logo facing your pet’s chin. Adjust the collar so that the contact points touch the skin of your pet’s neck. It may sometimes be necessary to trim the hair around the Contact Points To ensure skin contact.
  4. Check the tightness of the Receiver Collar by putting one finger between the end of a Contact Point and your pet’s neck. The fit should be snug but not Suffocatingly and uncomfortable (2B).
  5. Allow the collar on your pet to for several minutes then recheck the fit. Check the fit again And wait until your pet becomes more comfortable with the Receiver Collar fit.
  6. Once you are satisfied that your dog is already comfortable with the fit of the Receiver 2C Collar then you may trim any excess collar strap as following the instruction below (2C):

a. Using a pen; mark the desired length of the receiver. Give an allowance for growth if your pet is young or if it grows a thick winter coat.

b. Remove the Receiver Collar from the pet and cut off the excess from the marked point.

c. Seal the edge of the cut collar by running it over a flame along the frayed edges. After sealing; the collar may be put on the dog.

Important: It is important that the points below are observed for comfort, security, and success in training.

  • The first 2 weeks of training should be under your direct supervision.
  • Check that the fit is snug to prevent excessive pressure. You should be able to insert one finger between the Contact Point and your pet’s skin.
  • The Receiver Collar should never be on your pet for more than 12 consecutive hours.
  • Your pet’s neck must be examined daily for any sign of a rash or sore.
  • If a rash or sore is observed, remove the collar immediately and discontinue use for a few days.
  • If the after 48 hours; the rash or sore is still there, see your pet’s veterinarian.
  • Ensure that your dog’s neck and the Contact Points are cleaned and washed weekly. Use a washcloth and mild hand soap, then rinsed thoroughly.

If the measures above are not properly observed; a condition called Pressure Necrosis may occur. It is a condition where the skin develops stress or strain due to excessive and prolonged contact or by pressure.

To Re-Thread the Collar

The slide buckle keeps the collar in place.
The ridges must be face up; the collar may slip if not threaded properly.

Taking Your Pet Out of the Pet Area

Important: Remove the Receiver Collar and leave it in the Pet Area.
Once your pet learns about Boundary Zone; he will be associating it with the correction and so he will be reluctant to cross it for walks or even car rides.
Before taking your pet out of the boundary;

Option 1: Replace the Receiver Collar with any regular collar. Put your pet in a car that should be within the Pet Area and drive him out of the Pet Area.
Option 2: Replace the Receiver Collar with any regular collar and leash. Slowly walking him out of the Pet Area while giving a verbal command such as “OK” at a specific place of the Boundary Zone (the end of your driveway, sidewalk, etc.).

Always leave the Pet Area with a leash so your pet will associate leaving the Pet Area only on a leash, only at this place, and only with a person. You may initially find it difficult to convince your pet to leave the Pet Area and it may take some getting used to. You may do it with a food treat and lots of praise.

Note: You may also carry your pet out of the Pet Area but u have to still follow option.

Troubleshooting

Receiver Collar is not beeping or correcting.

• Check that the battery is properly installed.
• Check that both lights are lit on the Fence Transmitter. If not, refer to Page 18 and perform the “Short Loop Test”.

  3. Spread the Boundary Wire out into a circle. Set the Boundary Control Switch to B.
  4. Set the Boundary Width Control knob to 10.
  5. Loop Indicator Light is not lit: then Fence Transmitter is not functioning properly. Contact Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.
  6. Loop Indicator Light is lit, disconnect one end of the Boundary Wire from the Boundary Wire Terminal.
  7. Loop alarm does not make a sound: then the Fence Transmitter needs to be replaced. Contact Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.
  8. If the loop alarm does sound, plug the Boundary Wire back into the Boundary Wire Terminal.
  9. Hold the Test Light Contacts to the Receiver Contact Points. Hold the Receiver Collar next to the 10-foot length of Boundary Wire. The Receiver Collar should beep about one foot away from the Boundary Wire. The Test Light should then flash as you hold the Receiver Collar closer to the Boundary Wire.
  10. Receiver Collar does not beep and the Test Light does not flash: then the battery in the Receiver Collar needs replacement. If it still does not beep and the Test Light does not flash, please call the Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.
